Little Rock, Arkansas–Governor Asa Hutchinson sent a letter to Tom Vilsack, Secretary of the U.S. Department of Agriculture, today asking that Carroll, Clay, Craighead, Independence, Jackson, Lawrence, Lincoln, Madison, Prairie, Randolph, White and Woodruff Counties be declared a disaster due to significant crop loss. Many crops were near the harvest stage when they were submerged by water and severely damaged or destroyed. Over a four-week period, Northeast Arkansas suffered 8 to 12 inches of rain. The University of Arkansas Division of Agriculture published a report that estimated the damage to Arkansas crops to be in the range of $45.6 to $50 million.
